First Day in Cairo

Troy and |I left Houston on Halloween and traveled 24 hours to reach Egypt. As our final flighty approached the city of Cairo we caught our first glimpse of the Ancient Pyramids of Giza. They appeared to be completely isolated in the desert sand however, we found them to be in a carefully designed tourist setting surrounded by shops and cafes. Luckily the weather was very cool and the crowd was minimal. We took a buggy ride over rough terrain while many rode camels. Our buggy was primitive while the camels had gorgeous embroidered saddles and fancy muzzles and decorated bridles. They marched across the desert as they have done for centuries carrying their passengers like travelers headed to Jerusalem. Later we saw them on the streets of Giza returning to the camel hotel just like the did in the early days. Our guide was marvelous pointing our the engineering and artistry involved in the complex . George the guide is a Coptic Christian and he took us to visit his church. Beautiful icons and wood work adorned the walls of the building and the crypt was the home of the Holy Family who sought refuge on Egypt. We also saw what is believed to be the tomb of Jerimiah. The day ended with dinner on the terrace of our hotel watching the Pyramids sleeping in the beautiful African night.
